Tar Barrels 2019

Tar Barrels 2019

Tar BarrelsAs the evenings draw in and our University campuses take on their beautiful, autumnal colours, we can once again look forward to welcoming some of our favourite, seasonal traditions here in Exeter – including the infamous Tar Barrels of Ottery St. Mary.

For those of you unfamiliar with the event, Tar Barrels is a local, Devon tradition held in the town of Ottery St. Mary, just outside of Exeter, which coincides each year with bonfire night.

Getting there

• You will need to collect your wristband outside the media suite (DH2) on Mon 4/11 (10:00-16:00) or Tues 5/11 (10:00-19:00). You can collect St. Luke's tickets from The Lounge on Mon 4/11 16:00-20:00 and Tues 5/11 16:00-18:00. You’ll need your wristband to get on the coach so don’t forget to collect it!
• Pick up on Streatham is on Perry Road (outside Washington Singer) from 18:00. The last coach will be leaving at 20:00. St Luke’s ticket holders coach pick up will be between 6 and 8 pm from the St Leonards, Waitrose bus stop on Heavitree road (opposite side of the road to St Luke’s campus). Please look out for our marshal.
• No alcohol is to be brought on the coaches.
• While you’re there we want you to have a good time, but we also want you to stay safe as the event gets very crowded and you will be in close proximity to fire and burning tar barrels.

You’ll need to wear sensible clothing and comfortable footwear as the streets can get very dirty from the ashes on the ground and your clothes will soak up the smoke in the atmosphere.

For your safety, please read the guidelines on the official Tar Barrels website, where you can also find useful information and locations for the evening. Please note, by attending the event, you are agreeing to the risk and the organisers are not responsible for your safety while you’re at the event.

Coming back to Exeter

Coaches will pick you up from the drop off point from 22:30 and the last coach will be leaving at 00:00. All coaches will drop off at Paris Street and North Park Road. Drop off on Heavitree Road will be by request only - please ask the driver as you board the coach.

We hope you have a great evening at the Tar Barrels at Ottery St Mary! Remember to stay safe and don’t forget to tag us @exeterguild in your photos on social media!

Information from Ottery St Mary Carnival & Tar Barrels Committee

1. Could all students attending that are bringing drinks with them please ensure that it is in either plastic bottles or cans. Preferably do not bring any alcohol. If you wish to purchase beverages or alcohol at the event, there are plenty of outlets. THIS IS A GLASS FREE EVENT.

2. Please help us to reduce the waste on the streets by using the waste stations provided. They are there to try and reduce the amount of waste in the barrel rolling areas. This will help reduce possible accidents from barrel rollers slipping or tripping on waste.

3. Please wear suitable clothes on the night do not come in your best attire. There is a lot of smoke and the barrels emit ash and flames!

4. Please do not bring backpacks. The streets get very crowded and you could easily get caught up in another person’s clothing. Worst case scenario you could end up either losing your pack or have some of your belongings stolen from you! Remember it's crowded and cramped and an easy target for thieves.

5. Please enjoy the event and help us to keep this 300 year old tradition going. By paying a visit to our merchandise stalls, or simply pop any loose change into any of the collecting buckets being carried around the event. This will help enormously.
