Aims and Objectives:
The home of Exeter Liberal Youth, we aim to support, promote and campaign for one of the most successful liberal and centrist parties in Europe, as well as the party's progressive policies behind it all.
The Lib Dems have a prestigious history. The successor of the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party, it can count Gladstone, Lloyd George and even Winston Churchill as historic members. The party was the first to implement the provisions of a Welfare State in the UK during the great reforms of the Asquith Government, and in 1911 won a great victory for British democracy when it abolished the veto of the House of Lords.
Today, the party consistently attracts more voters at local and national elections than many of its sister liberal parties across the Continent, and in 2010 the party entered government for the first time since the 1940s - an historic and fantastic opportunity that allowed us to bring real and progressive change to Britain.
The Exeter Lib Dem Society will be busy this year with many socials, discussions, visiting speakers, cross-party debates, as well as campaigning and working with the local party. Members will get a chance to hear speakers from various levels of government (from MPs and MEPs to local Councillors) as well as civil servants, journalists and economists. This will give students many oppurtunties to learn about various aspects of politics. We will also be working closely with Exeter Students for Europe and For Future's Sake to fight Brexit and ensure the voice of young Liberals will be heard.
