About Us

Our Aims:

  1. To create activists, not just for the party, but for all Liberal causes

  2. To have fun and make contacts at our unparalleled socials

  3. To spread, through speakers & campaigns, a Liberal voice on campus

Starting as the Liberal Party in the Victorian era, we fought for many of the rights and freedoms Brits now take for granted; then, in the early 20th century, we built the foundations of the Welfare State. In the 80s, the old Liberal Party merged with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Lib Dems were born!

The Lib Dems are back - and at this time of crisis, we’re more important than ever! We’re at the front of the fight against Brexit, and all the nasty nationalism and populism behind it - just like we led the struggles for LGBT+ marriage and against the Iraq War.

We smashed the local and European elections last year, and young activists like us are on the front line of the Liberal battle, not just to stop Brexit, but to change both the country and British politics for good. Join us, and help to build a more progessive, open future!

Just three years ago, with the far-left takeover of Labour, the disastrous 2016 referendum, and the hard-right domination of the Tory party, the future for moderate and liberal politics seemed dark. Yet the Lib Dem fightback is taking off - we won the 2019 local elections, and came second in the European elections soon after. With our new leader Jo Swinson MP at the helm, the future seems bright.

Members will get a chance to hear speakers from MPs and MEPs to local Councillors, as well as getting first-hand campaigning experience and activist training. We work closely with Exeter Students for Europe to fight Brexit, and co-operate with groups across campus to make sure the voice of young Liberals is heard. Members will also enjoy our many different socials, campaigning opportunities, and days out.
