About Us

Enactus: Where Business Meets Charity.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. Champion social enterprise
  2. Develop our social enterprises
  3. Challenge our members to become future leaders in social enterprise

Enactus is Exeter University’s Social Enterprise society; just one of a larger network of student societies spread across Universities all over the world.

We create projects that tackle global issues such as poverty, waste or homelessness.

Our Local and International projects see a problem, use entrepreneurial action to find a solution and improve the lives of the individuals and communities that we work with.

These projects are not charities - they are social enterprises: innovative businesses that empower beneficiaries and make a difference to society.

We want you to become a social entrepreneur.

By joining our team, you will set yourself apart from other students. We provide workshops and training opportunities to improve and refine your business and leadership skills. You’ll be working alongside other like-minded individuals and building projects together. Most importantly, you’ll be changing the world for the better.

We have 3 Membership Streams you can apply to:

  1. New Project Fast Stream

  2. Current Project Stream

  3. Finance Stream

New Project Fast Stream:

Most of our new members will join the New Project Fast Stream! We've put together small teams interested in the same social issue, areas like food poverty, recycling waste and mental health, as well launching a new international project that will be working to improve conditions in a slum in Kenya.  We guide you through the process of building your own social enterprise. We work with you, providing workshops, training, one-to-one support and grants, alongside the university and our corporate sponsors. This is the fast-track to becoming a social entrepreneur.

Current Project Stream:

Biosmart is tackling fuel poverty in the small town of Kadzinuni on Kenya’s east coast. Local deforestation meant that women have had to endure a 3-hour round trip each day to collect wood and charcoal to cook on. This is time that could have been spent at school or at work. Biosmart saw an opportunity for an entrepreneurial solution to solve this issue. Working with the women of Kadzinuni, Biosmart is using furnaces that convert agricultural waste into charcoal for use as a fuel. The project will provide jobs, fuel and free time to find work or go to school, for many families in the village. Biosmart is looking to further implement the business plan in Kadzinuni and look to take the model to further locations across the world.

Lighthouse is tackling homelessness; specifically to help young people at risk of homelessness to gain employability skills. With Exeter having the second highest number of rough sleepers outside of London, this is a big issue. Lighthouse is aiming to use workshops and employability sessions to boost the employability of beneficiaries. Over the next year, the plan is to create the content for the workshops and sessions and start implementing positive change for beneficiaries. This project suits people who want to volunteer and work closely with vulnerable people.

Gourmet Mushroom Company is upcycling waste coffee ground to grow mushrooms. Our plan is to cement relations with project partners, create and implement a successful business plan and eventually sell some environmentally sustainable and high-quality mushrooms in the local community.

Finance Stream:

  • We’ve got a spot open for a new Commercial Team which will create a business in a sustainable way to generate profit to support our other projects.

  • All the money we fundraise is put back into the society to push our projects as far as they can go and provide the best training opportunities we can to our members! So if you’ve got a knack for raising money then consider joining our Fundraising Team!
