ELSA, the European Law Students’ Association is the largest organisation of aspiring lawyers in the world, with 50000+ members in 375 universities across 44 countries.

ELSA encourages aspiring lawyers (law or non-law students) to bridge theory and practice by offering a variety of opportunities in all areas of law.

Events fall under the ELSA key areas: Academic Activities (AA), Seminars & Conferences (S&C), and the Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP).

 

Academic Activities (AA)

  • ELSA International Law School - A one week academic programme located at a European university of your choice. Select your ELSA Law School based on your legal interests. When: Summer/Winter.

  • John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition - Location: Geneva, Switzerland. Prize: Certificate- Launching date: 15th September 2020

  • European Human Rights MCC (EHRMCC) - Location: European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg). Prize: Traineeship at the ECHR- Launcing date: 22nd September 2020  

  • London Human Rights MCC (LHRMCC) - Location: London School of Economics (LSE). Prize: Cash or gift card.

  • Commercial Law MCC (COMMOOT) - Location: University College London (UCL). Prize: Mini pupillage at Maitland Chambers. 

  • ELSA UK Negotiation Competition - Location: University of Bristol. Prize: Educational so no material benefits. 

  • Essay Competitions - Amicus Essay Prize Competition on the death penalty. Prize: Work experience at the Amicus London office.

  • Legal Research Groups - Students and young lawyers across the network are selected as researchers for a given topic in a specified field of law with the aim to make their conclusions publicly and internationally accessible. 

  • ELSA Law Review - Peer-reviewed journal containing articles from Law students all across Europe. Distributed to all 375 universities. 

 

Seminars & Conferences (S&C)

  • ELSA Delegations - Unique chance to become a part of international decision-making and to represent ELSA in front of leading world experts. Location: Across the world, including the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the International Trademark Association, the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, and more!

  • Institutional Visits - To be confirmed...

 

Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP)

  • Paid work experience across the globe, available exclusively to ELSA members!
  • Opportunity offered bi-annually, with over 150 firms offering traineeships. 
  • Traineeships last from 2 weeks to 2 years. 
  • If not paid, accomodation provided free of charge. 
  • Locations: Europe, USA, Pakistan, India, Dominican Republic, and more!

This is advantageous in that it allows you to diversify and internationalise your CV, as well as provide the platform for you to both learn new skills, and experience different jurisdictions. This is, in short, an experience of a lifetime!

Secondary ELSA Exeter Elections

Grab your chance to join our committee and have your say on what happens in ELSA Exeter! Election nominations open between Friday 24th September to Wednesday 29th September. Voting will start between Thursday 30th September and Monday 4th October. The available positions include VP for Marketing, VP for Seminars and Conferences, VP for Mooting, and VP for Socials. Marketing - Responsible for facebook/linkedin etc. Also responsible for fundraising/promotion (alongside MCC). Artistic skills desirable. Seminars & Conferences (S&C) - Responsible for the Summer and Winter Law Schools, ELSA Delegations, Study Visits and international ELSA Conferences. May create/host their own projects. Responsible for finding partners/speakers for events, if needed. Mooting (MCC) - Responsible for domestic and international ELSA moot court competitions. Expansive knowledge of COMMOOT, EHRMCC, KCA on refugee law and the JHJMCC desirable. May also create/host their own ELSA Exeter mooting events. Responsible for fundraising (alongside marketing). Social Events - Responsible for socials, pub quizzes, bar crawls etc No previous experience is needed and all students are free to nominate themselves. To run for the elections, you will need to have an ELSA Exeter membership. You are not required to necessarily have a manifesto, however this is encouraged where multiple people are running for the same positions. For any questions about these roles, feel free to DM any member of the committee.
