EUCO is an auditioned string orchestra with 20-25 string players, professionally conducted by Paul McClure and under the supervision of our student committee.
Under normal circumstances, EUCO rehearses every Monday during term time at 18:30-20:00 and holds at least one concert at the end of each term to showcase our work, giving us the chance to perform in venues such as the beautiful Mary Harris Chapel.
We play a wide variety of music to a professional standard thanks to our conductor Paul’s guidance. Our repertoire includes pieces like Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Vivaldi’s Double Violin Concerto in A Minor, Mozart’s Symphony No.25, to contemporary pieces such as Copland’s “Hoe Down” to Abreu’s Brazilian “Tico Tico no Fuba!”.
As well as our termly concerts, our orchestra has been on tours to places such as Berlin and Seville to have the chance to perform across Europe! (However due to the current climate it is uncertain when this will be possible within the near future). We have also taken part in a concert with Choral Society where we performed Mozart’s Requiem and have worked with one of the local primary schools to help inspire a passion for music. We hope to continue further outreach with university societies like this as well as with the wider community!
Due to the uncertainty with the current climate, we will be working with the Guild to adapt to follow the social distanced guidelines in place to organise as much musical activity where possible!
