Events fall under the ELSA key areas: Academic Activities (AA), Seminars & Conferences (S&C), and the Student-Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP).
Academic Activities (AA)
This area includes a variety of events. On campus, these can range from essay writing to legal debating workshops. ELSA also offers flagship projects. ELSA’s international mooting competitions are the most prestigious in the world, particularly the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC) and ELSA Moot Court Competition (EMC2). Operating on a stage-by-stage basis, participants will travel across countries. ELSA also offers Essay Competitions, such as the ELSA/Amicus Essay Prize Competition on the death penalty, with rewards including work experience at the Amicus London office. ELSA Legal Research Groups (LRG) are another exclusive and prestigious ELSA opportunity, as students and young lawyers around the network are selected as researchers for a given topic in a specified field of law with an aim to make their conclusions publicly and internationally accessible.
ELSA recently launched a new Legal Research Group on European Corporate Compliance in cooperation with K&L Gates, one of the world’s leading law firms.
Seminars & Conferences (S&C)
ELSA members have the exclusive opportunity of applying for delegation positions in conferences across the world, ranging from institutional conferences such as those at United Nations’ bodies, the Council of Europe, the International Trademark Association (ITA), the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, and more. Other events include symposiums organised all over the network (for example, if an ELSA local group in, Germany, is organising a weekend-long conference, the opportunity to attend will be available to you). ELSA Exeter also organises various lectures here on campus on many topical legal issues. Other events also include institutional visits such as to the Hague, to experience the International Criminal Court (ICC), and Study Exchanges to other ELSA local groups anywhere within the network.
Student-Trainee Exchange Programme
Otherwise known as STEP, it is a unique opportunity offered exclusively by ELSA, with two cycles running per year and over 150 firms offering traineeships. STEP basically opens a database of paid work experience opportunities across the globe, available for application by any ELSA member. This is advantageous in that it allows you to diversify and internationalise your CV, as well as provide the platform for you to both learn new skills, and experience different jurisdictions. This is, in short, an experience of a lifetime!

ELSA has partnerships with prestigious and acclaimed leading law firms and service-providers, as well as both legal decision-making and academic institutions, all over the world.
ELSA Exeter advocates the ELSA values and vision: to encourage students to participate and apply for opportunities outside their curriculum, to broaden their legal knowledge, and ultimately prepare them for a career in an international work environment. With the exception of STEP and Delegations, there is no pre-requisite of legal knowledge and experience to participate and apply for any event on offer in the network.
