About Us

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To maintain our standing as a social society, with an inclusive ethos. Anybody can get involved, member or otherwise.
  2. To build upon previous years' events, such as our Cabaret Evenings, and make these more inclusive and more appealing to our members.
  3. To develop links with societies we've worked with in the past and build bridges with ones we are yet to work with.
  4. To produce outstanding Musical Theatre productions, worthy of going beyond the boundaries of University Student Theatre.
  5. To be bold in our show decisions and create truly interesting and appealing work for all.

Shotgun Theatre is Exeter University’s boldest Musical Theatre Society, seeking to create innovative and inclusive productions with input from our members. We are committed to providing opportunities in all aspects of theatre: performing, producing, and creating. We pride ourselves on being a truly inclusive society, allowing anybody to be involved in decisions that regard the society’s future. Twice a year, we offer our members the opportunity to vote on our show decisions, giving them a voice on the future of the society.

We produce at least two shows a year; with one performing at Exeter Phoenix in mid-January.
Our past productions include: RENT, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors, Dogfight, Made in Dagenham, Godspell, It Shoulda Been You, The Last Five Years, and Avenue Q.

Shotgun Theatre has a long history of producing well-known shows to excellent reviews. In 2014, Shotgun Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening won multiple awards at the National Student Drama Festival including Cameron Mackintosh Award for Best Musical, Best Newcomer Director, and judge’s commendation for Best Actor. In 2017, ‘Godspell’ performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to 4-star reviews, after a successful run in Exeter.

Twice a term, we hold our famous Open Mic Cabaret Evenings. These events are open to anybody to come along and sing Musical Theatre songs, or to simply enjoy an evening of music. We are proud to have a close relationship with Old Timers, a local Exeter business, at which we hold these bi-termly events.

As well as our two annual shows, we also offer our members the opportunity to write, create, produce, and perform in our annual Original Musical (joint with Theatre with Teeth). This is a fantastic chance to showcase the creative talent at the University of Exeter, and allows our society to build bridges with others within the Students’ Guild.
