About Us

Welcome to the Howard League Society Page!

The Howard League for Penal Reform is the oldest penal reform charity in the UK. It was established in 1866 and is named after John Howard, one of the first prison reformers. The aim of this charity is to ensure less crime, safer communities, and fewer people in prison

Our society aims to raise awareness around the need for penal reform and helps to fundraise to make this possible. We host regular academic and debate style events that look to educate and instigate discussions around how the prison system operates and how it can be improved.

In addition to this, we host fundraising and social events on a regular basis; creating an inclusive and passionate society for those who are interested in prison reform and want to meet like-minded people.

If you study Law, Criminology, Psychology or Sociology or are a student with an interest in the criminal justice system this society is a great opportunity to get involved with a charitable cause and have some fun.

We look forward to meeting all our members in September,

Jade & Carolene,

President and VP 2020/21
