In an ever more urban world, Sir David Attenborough has connected millions of people to the natural world, whether it be the surprising natural phenomena taking place on peoples' doorsteps, or life at the heart of remote and exotic landscapes which most of us would never otherwise get the opportunity to see.
In the spirit of Attenborough, this society will aim to be a gateway to the natural world. We will provide opportunities to see and learn about the wildlife on our doorsteps here in Exeter, as well as further afield.
Whether you are already an avid naturalist or birder, or simply enjoy the outdoors and would like to learn more about the natural world, this society will have something to offer you.
What to expect
We will hope to see much of Southwest England's biodiversity throughout the course of the year such as dolphins, seals, foxes, and badgers, as well as over 150 species of birds (including Pied Avocet, Bullfinch, Dartford Warbler, Kingfisher, White-throated Dipper, Mandarin Duck, Ring-necked Parakeet, etc). You will also be able learn how to contribute to our understanding of the world's biodiversity through project ebird, the world's largest biodiversity-related citizen science project, with over 100 million bird sightings entered each year.
The benefits of experiencing the natural world are countless- from improving mental health and relieving stress to gaining a greater understanding of the environmental threats facing our world today. Regardless of prior knowledge, this society is open to anyone with even the slightest curiosity about the natural world.
We are currently working on a schedule for this year in light of new COVID regulations and will update on Facebook and here once activities have been planned.
These will likely include a Netflix watch party and hopefully in person nature walks locally and around the Southwest as soon as this becomes possible. We hope to have a more ambitous end of year trip for some international birding but this is of course subject to changing covid regulations.
