YMCA Homelessness society is centred around the issue of homelessness. We work with all kinds of homlessness charities across Exeter such as Bread of Life, St Petrock's and St David's Soup Kitchen, but our main focus is YMCA Exeter.
As a youth charity, YMCA Exeter’s vision is to empower young people to experience fullness of life in body, mind and spirit. They do this by providing supported accommodation for homeless 16-29 year olds as well as mental health and wellbeing support for anyone between the ages of 5-30. We seek to support the work of YMCA Exeter through raising awareness of their work, fundraising and supporting their residents in practical ways. In the past, we have fundraised through the Great West Run (Exeter half marathon), Sleep Easy (a sponsored sleep-out), Santa Powerfan (a freefall on Exeter Quay) and various cake sales in forum. We also seek to help the residents in practical ways, for the last two years making gift boxes for the residents of YMCA Exeter at Christmas time.
We also exist to to raise awareness of, and provide volunteering opportunities within other homelessness charities in Exeter, enabling students to make a difference and become involved in Exeter’s wider society. This could be from serving food at a soup kitchen to helping coordinate emergency housing for young people with nowhere to go. This year, we’re also looking to do more regular socials to provide more of a community of students who are all passionate about this issue. We also want to run training sessions, enabling students to gain an increased understanding of the issue and how to help. Joining YMCA Homelessness society is a way to find out more about homelessness, be part of tackling the issues surrounding homelessness and make great friends!
