The NSS

Your Subject Chair should have received a copy of your discipline's NSS data from department staff. This data can help to identify where feedback from previous students has identified the stronger and weaker areas of your course, and can give you a good place to start with regards to finding out what needs changing, or what questions need asking.

If you have not seen the data for your discipline, you can download it directly from the Office for Students website. You will want the NSS results by teaching provider for all providers and would then have to filter the CAH Level 2 list for University of Exeter under Provider and your discipline under Subject.

The questions asked by the NSS can be found online as well. Questions 1 to 27 are the core questionnaire for all subjects, with question 28 allowing for students to provide any additional comments. Questions 29-34 are specifically aimed at students who have undergone NHS placements.

It is important to note that it is not the responsibility of reps to improve their subjects' NSS scores, neither should the NSS be viewed as a measure of how well reps are doing. It should act as a helpful resource to assist with improving awareness and helping to make change.

When looking at your NSS summary, be sure to look not only at the percentage of students who answered positively, but also those who answered in a neutral or negative fashion. This will help you identify areas where students have actively expressed concerns or feel dissatisfied, as well as those areas which did not significantly impact a student's experience, either in a positive or negative way.

More information about the NSS can be found on the Office for Students website.
