Coming back from the holidays and getting back into the student spirit is always an exciting time. On the 17 January we officially finished Refreshers’ week after a brilliant series of events and opportunities, ready to help students begin 2020 on an even more positive note than before. To kick off, we had our official Launch Party at the Ram on 11 January, which held a Raffle with some amazing prizes, and £2 drinks offers. Not only were tickets free, but everybody could sit back and enjoy a relaxing cocktail too.
Societies and stalls!
The forum is always a place where something is going on, and we were only too delighted to contribute to this hustle and bustle during Refreshers’ Week. From 13 January we got to work and established a diverse and interesting group of stalls in the forum. Not only could you see the usual suspects from the AU looking for the next big winner to sign up to their team, we also made sure to recognise post-university life with our New Skills Day! Career Zone, the Guild Council and several employability related societies were in full swing.
As a preliminary to Wellbeing Week, we also had Wellbeing Wednesday on 15 January to get things started, with stalls from Advice, the Student Health Centre and the Chaplaincy Team. There were also some fresh faces in our New Society Fair, from Cheese Society to Ex4homeless. Altogether, we had over 100 society, commercial and university stalls throughout the week, along with 80 society-run events! Thanks to all those who hosted, and of course to our students for their interest.
The return of the Pop-up Bar
Last term we arranged for the appearance of the pop-up bar at St. Luke’s, and this was a resounding success. We’re delighted that demand for the return of the pop-up bar was because it was such a great event and are happy that so many students at St. Luke’s were interested in attending! Suffice to say, G47 witnessed the return of the pop-up bar on 17 January along with the brilliant offers and deals.
Festival of Culture
If cheap drinks, society-run activities and raffle prizes weren’t enough, we ended Refreshers’ on a high note with the Festival of Culture. You may have seen a showcase of over 30 of the Guild’s International, Faith & Worldview and other societies giving you a fresh perspective on their values and culture, as well as handing out free food. Not only was Jewish Society just a few steps away from Scandinavian Society, you could also pop over for a friendly game of mah-jong at the Mahjong & Strategic Games Society.
As a final note, we at the Guild would like to thank all the societies who contributed throughout the week and made Refreshers’ as fun and inclusive as ever. With all great things comes an end, however this does not mean that we don’t have more activities to follow later in the term. Nominations for elections are now open, so if you think you have a view that needs listening to, put yourself forward. Not only that, we’re also beginning Wellbeing Week from 27 – 31 January, so keep an eye out on our website!
