Night Safety Survey

Night Safety Survey

Students living here still face many barriers when taking part in our city’s social activities, travelling about or working at night-time...

Content warning: some students may be triggered by the contents of the survey and it may cause them to feel anxious, worried, nervous and stressed. If you have any negative feelings or concerns and would like to discuss your own experiences with a member of the University’s Wellbeing Services, you can find more information on their website. You can find additional resources on our website or talk to our Advice team.

All students have the right to enjoy Exeter after dark. Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? And yet the students living here still face many barriers when taking part in our city’s social activities, travelling about or working at night-time.

We know that students can be a victim of crime either during the day or at night, but at night in particular a combination of factors create an environment where women, non-binary and trans students in particular are less likely to feel safe. We also know that women and LGBTQ+ students still face much higher levels of sexual violence, assault, and abuse than the rest of society at night.

The Guild is committed to supporting all students and it does not support any form of harassment or other inappropriate behaviours within the student community. To this end, in partnership with the University, The Gender Safety Group and several local groups have come together in order to create a range of night safety initiatives that will have a positive impact on night safety for all Exeter students and Exeter as a community. You can find more information here.

To help us develop these initiatives we need your help. By completing this survey, we will be able to understand the problems you face, the concerns you have around your safety at night and how we can improve night safety for all.

You may feel that some of the questions are quite personal and perhaps unrelated, but they are there to help us understand the bigger picture, how students socialise, the places you go to and things that you do such as eat, drink and dance that help form a typical night out.

The survey will be 100% anonymous, so please be open and honest. All questions except for the first few demographic questions will be optional, but the more you can complete the more we will be able to understand.

To say thank you all respondents can enter a prize draw to win one of five prizes of £50 Amazon vouchers. At the end of the survey you will be given a link to another website where you can leave your details this will ensure your responses are not connected to you and remain 100% anonymous.

We will also be running some focus groups as part of our research. If you would like to participate in these groups, you will find the signup form on the same separate website as the prize draw.
