National Care leavers Week 25 - 30 October 2021

Come and join us for coffee and cake this Wednesday!

To celebrate National Care Leavers Week, we are welcoming any care experienced or care leavers to come and have coffee and cake on us, this Wednesday 27 October in the Exploration Lab (level 2 in the Forum) 11:00 – 13:00.

At the University of Exeter we define a care leaver as a young person (up to the age of 25) who has been looked after by a UK local authority for more than 13 weeks since they were 14, including some time at age 16 or 17.

We define care experienced as any student who has been or is currently in care or from a looked after background at any stage of their life, no matter how short. This care may have been provided in one of many different settings, such as in residential care, foster care, kinship care or looked after at home with a supervision requirement.

Challenges and Barriers

Students may have faced many barriers in their journey to Higher Education. From less stability in home lives, often changing foster care and schools many times, to lack of support and facing difficult or traumatic events which can lead to social isolation and loneliness.

Studies also show these students could be more likely to need special needs support intervention and have mental health issues.

We want to offer support to enable our care leavers/care experienced students to progress, achieve their goals and feel less isolated and financially disadvantaged here at Exeter. We also work with other organisations such as Avocados Advocacy who can support and listen to students about what they need.

Exeter has signed up to show commitment to the Care Leaver Covenant - a national programme supporting care leavers to succeed.

We have a variety of support on offer including:

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Contextualised Offer
  • Care Leaver’s Bursary to support the additional cost of summer accommodation needs.
  • Designated member of staff in Wellbeing
  • Support group meetings
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Student Employability opportunities
  • Travel Bursary to either attend campus tour, Open day, interview or an Offer Holder Visit Day
  • Welcome Package – includes society/sport membership, supermarket voucher, laundry costs, home basics pack.
  • Graduation Package: graduation costs & 1 months’ rent deposit.
