We will be adding recommendations throughout the month! Here are a few to get you started.

  • Reading

Find the University of Exeter Library LGBTQ+ reading list here.

    Fiction

Oranges are Not the Only Fruit – Jeanette Winterson.

A coming of age story about a girl growing up in the English countryside grappling with the complexities of identity, friendship, religion, family and everything else that comes with being a young women who feels slightly at odds with the world around her. This book is a classic, and is a fervent favourite in LGBTQ+ circles, it is my go to recommendation and gift!

    Non-Fiction

The Transgender Issue – Shon Faye

    Queer City – Peter Ackroyd

    Articles

‘I feel like it’s quite shaky acceptance': trans kids and the fight for inclusion by Shon Faye

What my queer journey taught me about love by Amelia Abraham

  • Watching

Pray Away (Netflix). A documentary shining a light on one of the largest ‘ex-gay’ community movements in the USA. The documentary interviews the founders of this movement and their reflections since leaving and renouncing the group and its works. This is, at times, a difficult documentary to watch, but the shifting attitudes of those that it follows is uplifting. It is an important story, one that may be a useful watch for anyone who needs reminding that the LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination across the world.

Gentleman Jack (Channel 4/4oD). A captivating drama based on the true story of an LGBTQ+ trailblazer Anne Lister (aka Gentleman Jack) in 19th century Halifax. This is a great piece of television, and its made even better knowing that its based on real life!

It's A Sin (Channel 4/4oD).Russell T Davies's heart-shattering drama of a group of friends in London battling the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Disclosure (Netflix). This documentary sees leading voices in the trans community share heartfelt perspectives and poignant observations on Hollywood's depiction of transgender people, and how this influenced society.

  • Listening

You’re Wrong About. Ep. The Stonewall Uprising. A fascinating look at the Stonewall Uprising, for anyone that doesn’t know about this event, this will be an eye-opening listen into arguably one of the most important moments in LGBTQ+ History. For those who are familiar with this revolution, the podcast will undoubtedly add another layer of knowledge and add some interesting discourse to some important questions like ‘who threw the first brick?’.

Making Gay History Intimate, personal portraits of both known and long-forgotten champions, heroes, and witnesses to history are brought to you from rare archival interviews featured in Making Gay History.

About LGBTQ+ History Month

Everyone is welcome, and everyone is celebrated. I hope that the series of events that we have help to shine a light on the vibrant and inspiring community we have here in Exeter, and make every member of the LGBTQ+ community feel a sense of belonging, pride and celebration.

Over the month, we need your help to make sure Exeter is the most welcoming and supportive place it can be for LGBTQ+ people. If you identify (you don’t need to be ‘out’) as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, we've released an anonymous survey which focuses on support and community. Whilst the focus of this month is on celebration. However, some topics can still be difficult, you can find support and resources specifically for LGBTQ+ people below.

We recognise that the LGBTQ+ community and women often feel more unsafe at night. Your safety at night is a big priority for us at the moment, and we are working with the University, the Gender Safety group and other local groups to create some night safety initiatives that will have a positive impact on night safety for all Exeter students and Exeter as a community. We'd like to hear from you about your experiences. Complete the survey.

Student Content

  • We want YOU to write for our website to help share and celebrate queer history, identity and culture (open to all members and allies).

We're looking for people to write two types of posts:

BLOG POST – write about anything relating to LGBTQ+ culture, people and history (approx. 300-500 words)

SPOTLIGHT - answer some pre prepared questions about why this month is important, media recommendations, and lots more (the aim of this is to share how vibrant our LGBTQ+ and ally community is here in Exeter!)

I’d love for as many students (staff and alumni) as possible to get involved - so please share this with your network! Drop me a message or email (campaigns@exeterguild.com) if you have any questions or would like to get involved.
