What is the relationship between mental illness and moral responsibility? One common way of thinking about this is as follows. When we think of someone’s behaviour as attributable to mental illness, this tends to mean that it should not be taken as a reflection of “who they really are”. In a related manner, the behaviour should not be as strictly morally evaluated, if indeed it should be morally evaluated at all. Why do we think like this, and what are the consequences of doing so?
