Sustainability & Green Unit are responsible for overseeing and assisting with the development of the sustainability practices of the Guild.

They build networks, scrutinise sustainability policies, and organise and deliver Sustainabilty Projects.

DVP Sustainability Role Description

PURPOSE: hide

  • Oversee the development of sustainability practices of the Guild, societies and other groups within the University.
  • Provide student scrutiny and oversight of the University’s sustainability policy and practices.

Develop the sustainability policies of the Guild

Work within democratic structures to develop and improve sustainability policies of the Guild.

  • Where democratic evidence exists that change is required, to work with staff support to enhance the Officer’s Code of Conduct with behavioural guidelines for elected/volunteer students.
  • To work on policy when required by structural barriers to improve and enhance sustainability at the Guild and University.
  • To campaign on any policy in order to have it passed as a Large Idea.
 
Push for sustainable services

Demand services, from both the Guild and the University, to be sustainable and ethical, reducing our impacts upon the environment.

  • Actively commit to reducing our environmental impacts.
  • Where a student communicates a specific requirement regarding the provision of a service run by the University or Guild, to communicate that back with specific suggestions to improve the services.
 
Lead the University-level engagement with sustainability

Engage with, and lead, the approach to sustainability within the Guild and the University in order to influence decisions and make change happen.

  • Lead University-level meetings and workshops on sustainability. 
  • Actively prepare, alongside volunteers and project leaders, to set agendas and make change happen.
 
Support Sustainability Projects

Assist volunteers in completing Sustainability Projects and lead the work with Guild staff to make decisions regarding resourcing Projects that are accessible to all students.

  • Have an awareness of current Sustainability & Green Unit funding and the implications of funding Sustainability Projects.
  • Work with the named Staff Support for DVP Sustainability to lead and support Sustainability Projects.
  • Ensure Sustainability Projects are accessible and relevant to students.
 
Campaign on sustainability and environmental issues

Use democratic systems to campaign on sustainability and environmental issues, with a focus on reducing the barriers to sustainability for marginalised students.

  • Take an intersectional approach to sustainability, understanding the practicalities of sustainability for marginalised groups, especially those who experience many marginalisations.
  • Use Student Ideas and work with other Deputy-Vice Presidents, and Sabbatical Officers, to deliver campaigns that make change happen.
