Interested in applying for Welcome Team 2020? Let us tell you why you should!
What does Welcome Team do?
Welcome Team helps to settle in new students during Freshers' Week and create a welcoming and positive student experience. They do everything from greeting students as they arrive either on campus or at Heathrow airport or providing campus tours and helping at welcome events. The purpose of Welcome Team is to settle and engage new members on their arrival to Exeter, creating a sense of belonging and a friendly introduction to the city that is now their home. The Team is instrumental in ensuring that students have a fantastic, safe, friendly, and welcoming experience from the first day they arrive at the University of Exeter.
What opportunities are available?
There are a number of roles available, including Casual Staff, Team Leaders and Team Members. Within these roles there are a number of different activities, from moving students in, to running welcome events! Many students who volunteer tend to go on to become committee members or team leaders/casual staff in future years! For more information on the different roles see here.
What difference can a volunteer can make?
Without Welcome Team, the first week of University for new students would be totally different. Welcome Team provide that familiar face who can show you where things are or answer your questions, and you can rarely go anywhere on campus without seeing one! Without these familiar faces, each student arriving would not get that individual welcome onto campus, and navigating Freshers' Week and campus would be so much harder.
What can a volunteer gain from the experience?
All volunteers receive free first aid training, mental health first aid, and safeguarding training. Volunteers get free breakfast and dinner at catered halls for 9 days over Freshers' Week as well as an awards night to recognise their hard work and commitment.
When and wHERE does the volunteering take place?
During Freshers' Week 2020: 10th - 18th September 2020, most activity is based on campus but there are opportunities to greet arriving students at Heathrow Airport! Training will take place the week before Freshers' on campus - date to be confirmed!
How much time do I have to commit?
Up to you! Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they want! The shifts can easily fit around your Freshers' Week activity and there are a variety of different shift types you can sign up to.
Applications for Team Members, Team Leaders and Casual Staff will open on 10 February 2020.
