What does it mean to be a volunteer?

First of all, being a volunteer means you are willing to give your free time for a cause or organisation you care about without being asked- and that is amazing!

Every volunteering opportunity looks different, but there are a few things you can expect when volunteering:

Your Rights as a volunteer
  1. To have a clear description of your role and responsibilities within the project or organisation. 
  2. To have the name of someone on the project or in the organisation that will look after your interests while you volunteer. This includes an introduction, training, support and supervision. 
  3. To be assured that any information shared is kept confidential and compliant with Data Protection Regulations. 
  4. Not to be exploited; As a volunteer, you are not there to replace paid workers or be asked to do anything which is against your principles or beliefs. 
  5. To be reimbursed for expenses necessary for you to take part in volunteering, such as travel expenses. Volunteering should not incur a cost to you

Your responsibilities as a volunteer 
  • To be familiar with the aims and objectives so that you can help work to meet these. 

  • To do what is reasonably asked of you to the best of your ability. 

  • To treat anything you are told in confidence whilst volunteering in an appropriate manner, and follow safeguarding procedures
  • To remember that whilst volunteering on campus and in the local community, you represent the project, organisation and the student body.
  • To honour any commitment you make, and notify the Project Leader or supporting staff in good time if you cannot keep this commitment. 
  • To attend necessary training in order to fulfil your role and to communicate your availability where relevant so that an alternative time can be arranged for you if required.
