About Exeter Student Nightline

For up-to-date information about all the services Nightline has to offer and how to volunteer with us, please visit our new website at https://exeter.nightline.ac.uk/.

Exeter Student Nightline is a confidential listening and information service run by students for students at the University of Exeter. We are affiliated with the National Nightline Association,  and one of 35 Good Practice Guidelines Accredited university nightlines in the country. We’re essentially a bit like the Samaritans, but just for Exeter’s student population! Available from 8pm until 8am throughout the night during term time, we are here to listen to anything students would like to talk about - whether that be exam stress, mental health issues, family problems or even just because they’d like company for the walk home after a night out.

Students can get in touch with us to use our listening or information service in a number of ways:

Phone - (our number is on the back of all University of Exeter student cards)

Instant Messenger - https://im.exeter.nightline.ac.uk/webim

Text - 07786 209 309

Skype – exeterstudentnightline

We give students the time and space to talk through whatever is on their mind. We are here for you to discuss anything you want, whether it is something that is troubling you, something you've never told anyone before, or if you're just looking to chat about your day. Nightline is completely anonymous, confidential and prejudice-free, so whatever your beliefs or circumstances, you can talk freely in confidence that you will not be judged and you will never be asked for personal details. We are here for all students, and no problem is too small or embarrassing for you to talk about. We may not be professional counsellors, but all of our volunteer listeners have passed our training, and as students themselves understand the varied stresses of student life.

For more information about our confidentiality policy and the rare occasions we will break confidentiality, please visit our website.

Nightline is also your university 118 service. We have a range of service information for you and also provide a wide variety of university-specific information. As well as details about university services such as Wellbeing, we also have the information for a wide variety of other support services, such as Victim Support, Rape Crisis and other helplines. We’re also able to offer more everyday advice; if you need a number, directions home, or if you’re locked out of halls and don’t know who to call, we can help. If information is what you're looking for, that's what we will provide. We won't ask you to talk about anything more with us.

Interested in helping other students whilst gaining key life skills and meeting new people? We are always looking to recruit enthusiastic and conscientious students into our ever-growing group of volunteers. Nightline is a fantastic society to be involved with whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student here at Exeter. Not only is the time our members give hugely appreciated by committee, the Guild, and the student body, but hours spent volunteering with us are also eligible for the Exeter Award Scheme, and are a great CV booster.

There are two great ways to get involved with Nightline. You can either be trained as a phone-operator, or if you’d rather not take night shifts, you can join our Publicity Team, working to promote the service on campus. Both are really important roles, and essential in keeping Nightline a relevant, accessible service for all students!

If you’re interested in volunteering as a phone operator, no prior experience is needed, although an open mind and a friendly phone manner is definitely handy! Full training is provided, and at no point are trainees obliged to continue their work with the service. As a Nightline volunteer, you will always have the full support of committee and members alike, and full training can be acquired at your own pace. If you think you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact our training officers via email and we will be in touch you with details of our next training event. Our training email is: exeternltraining@gmail.com
