Exam Feedback. Why is it any different? It would seem implausible now to receive no feedback on an essay or similar assessment but exams remain perceived as different.
January exams can be extremely useful in improving future academic performance, make sure you take advantage of the opportunity they offer– collect feedback!
Over the course of your degree you’ll get assessed by a number of different methods; essays, presentations, group work, seminar input and of course exams. For each of these you’ll want feedback on current performance to improve at your next effort, to knock that 55 up to a 60, that 63 to a 68, that 70 to a 75.
Yet, many students do not collect any exam feedback. Indeed you may not know that you have a legal right to get feedback on all examinations you take. Find out more here.
Under the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998, any students within the United Kingdom can receive detailed feedback for any examination. Universities have 40 days to respond from the date of the publication of results, or within five months of the students’ request — whichever is the earliest.
While feedback on January exams may not in every case be able to improve knowledge of content to help with future assessment, by getting detailed feedback you can:
· Improve the structure of answers
· See how content should reflect the question
· Improve your time management
· Get a clear idea where you went wrong
· And much much more!
So ask your department the best means to collect exam feedback and make the effort to reflect on January exams. It can only help come the Summer...
